CBD 101:
The Basics
What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabinoid found in hemp (and marijuana). There are over 100 cannabinoids in the hemp plant, but CBD is the one with the most potential therapeutic uses. It is being studied for its ability to help with pain, seizures, headache, sleep, anxiety, diabetes, and more. Click here for a link to some of the recent studies involving CBD.
How does CBD work?
CBD enhances an internal system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is believed to play a major role in regulating homeostasis, or balance, in a variety of important body systems. That’s why CBD is showing promise with so many different ailments within the body. Think of your body as a stereo system. The ECS is not simply an “on/off” switch. Rather, it is the volume control and the equalizer, responsible for fine-tuning the system to produce the richest, fullest, most balanced sound (health) possible. When enhanced by CBD, the ECS is significantly more effective at fine-tuning the body.
Is hemp the same as CBD?
Not exactly, but they are closely related. Hemp is the plant from which CBD (and other cannabinoids) are extracted. After that, hemp extract is put into oils, capsules, gummies, and creams.
So, hemp extract contains CBD. Is it legal?
Yes. The 2018 federal farm bill specifically stated that hemp and hemp derived products are legal for interstate commerce, meaning that they can be sold in all 50 states. This includes hemp extract.
Are hemp & CBD safe?
Yes. Hemp seed oil was given a status of “generally regarded as safe” by the FDA. And FDA recently approved the CBD prescription drug Epidiolex® for the treatment of rare seizures in children as young as 2 years old. A major requirement of the FDA drug approval process involves manufacturers demonstrating safety of their drug product.
Is CBD the same as medical marijuana?
No. CBD will not get you "high". Medical marijauna, while legal in some states, is still illegal at the federal level. CBD is legal at the federal level, and does not require a prescription. However, we do recommend getting a medical grade CBD supplement from a trusted healthcare provider, like your pharmacist or doctor.
Do I need to buy hemp extract from a dispensary?
No. Hemp is not the same as marijuana, so you do not need a medical card, prescription, or dispensary to purchase hemp extract. In fact, we believe that it is most appropriate to get hemp extract from your trusted healthcare professional.
Will CBD get me “high”?
No. The federal government allows only trace amounts (<0.3%) of THC in CBD products. That is far less than the amount required to produce intoxication. However, if you have reduced liver or kidney function, these levels could build up over time & produce impairment. For that reason, we recommend buying medical grade CBD supplement like MediHempRx, that is formulated to be completely free of THC.
Can I fail a drug test with hemp extract or CBD?
Yes. Even trace amounts of THC found in legal hemp products can build up over time & result in a positive drug test. For this reason, anyone who is subject to drug testing should insist on a medical grade, THC-free CBD supplement like MediHempRx.
